Business Confidence Holds Steady in Latest FM Survey

The latest Business Confidence Report for the FM sector reveals a picture of steady, if cautious, optimism. While macroeconomic uncertainty and rising costs remain concerns, most facilities management and service businesses report stable order books and expect modest growth in 2024. Labour availability and wage inflation are cited as the top operational challenges, followed by energy costs and the complexity of managing hybrid client contracts. Investment in digital tools and training is rising as firms try to do more with the same headcount.

For fleet and operations managers, the survey findings underline the importance of operational efficiency. When labour is the biggest cost and hardest to control, every other line of the P&L comes under scrutiny. Fleet is often the second or third largest controllable cost, and one of the few where meaningful savings can be delivered quickly through better procurement, smarter funding, or right-sizing the fleet to match actual utilisation rather than historic assumptions.

Now is the time to ask whether your vehicles are working as hard as your people. Are pool vans being shared efficiently, or could fewer vehicles do the job with better scheduling? Are company car drivers in the right tax-efficient models, or are you leaving salary and BIK savings on the table? Are you paying off-contract maintenance rates, or benefiting from a national network deal? These questions matter more when every percentage point of margin counts.
