Cybersecurity focus sharpens for connected buildings and fleets

As buildings, plant and equipment become more connected, cybersecurity is moving from IT departments into operational risk. A smart building-management system can be hacked; so can a connected fleet. Vehicle telematics platforms collect location, driving behaviour, fuel use and maintenance data—valuable intelligence that, if intercepted or manipulated, could disrupt operations, expose commercial information or compromise driver privacy. The industry is waking up to the fact that connectivity brings risk as well as reward.

For fleet managers, the practical question is: who controls your data, and how is it protected? Some telematics providers operate on open platforms with patchy security. Others bolt legacy hardware onto modern software, creating vulnerabilities. And many fleet operators don't ask the question until there's a breach or a GDPR inquiry. By then, the damage is done—operationally, financially and reputationally.

The best practice is to choose telematics and fleet-management platforms that meet recognised security standards, encrypt data in transit and at rest, and give you full control over who sees what. Your provider should be able to explain their security architecture, not just their dashboard. And if you're operating vehicles on sensitive sites—government, critical infrastructure, events—your clients may soon require proof of cyber hygiene as part of supplier due diligence.

Bluepoppy's connected fleet platform is built with data security and client confidentiality as standard. We're independent, UK-based and transparent about how your data is held, used and protected. If cybersecurity is on your risk register—or should be—talk to us about a Fleet Data Review. We'll show you what you're sharing, who can see it, and what you should be asking your current provider.

Bluepoppy view: Connected fleets generate valuable data—and valuable targets. Security and control matter as much as the dashboard.
